Bill Burr’s new comedy special “Drop Dead Years” is now available to stream on Hulu. The special is described as his most personal and introspective yet, tackling topics like male sadness and dating advice. Burr also made his Broadway debut this week in the revival of “Glengarry Glen Ross.” He plays Dave Moss, a real estate salesman involved in a high-stakes competition.
The role involves selling undesirable land to unsuspecting clients to win a car or risk getting fired. In an interview on “The Breakfast Club,” Burr criticized Elon Musk for giving a Nazi salute in public. He questioned how Musk still has support and a job after this incident.
Burr said his issue with Musk is not political, but he’s amazed that liberals only had one day of outrage before moving on. Speaking to NPR, Burr called Musk an “idiot” and said liberals are afraid to stand up to him. He refuses to believe Musk’s salute was accidental.
Bill Burr’s personal comedy introspection
Burr admits to struggling with anger issues, which he traces back to emotional abuse he experienced as a child. He says if he could make people laugh, he was less likely to get hurt.
Therapy and magic mushrooms have helped him deal with his past and feel lighter on stage. As a redhead, Burr felt typecast in Hollywood before going bald. He says mushrooms gave him profound insights into his childhood loneliness and inspired him to become a better person.
Reflecting on his early career jokes about women, Burr says they stemmed from his own struggles with relationships and wanting to get married. He feared ending up alone like some older comics. Burr is determined to end the cycle of abuse and not pass on his demons to the next generation.
He accepts he can’t change his past, but aims to ensure that pain dies with him.
