UK citizenship

Courtney Love has announced that she is seeking UK citizenship and plans to permanently live in the United Kingdom. The singer and songwriter expressed her dismay with America’s direction under President Donald Trump. At a Royal Geographical Society event in London, the 60-year-old former frontwoman for the band Hole and widow of Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain expressed her excitement about obtaining British citizenship.

Love has reportedly lived in London since 2019 and now looks forward to a more permanent relocation. “It’s so great to live here. I’m finally getting my British citizenship in six months.

I get to be a citizen – I’m applying, man! According to reports, ” can’t get rid of me!” she said. Love criticized Trump’s administration, describing America as “frightening now.” “In terms of Trump, and particularly this group… it’s like emperor-core – like, [they’re] wearing million-dollar watches,” she said.

She further elaborated, saying, “It’s frightening now.

It’s like cyanide now.”

Love is not the only celebrity to announce her departure from America following Trump’s re-election.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi also reportedly moved overseas after the 2024 election, wanting to distance themselves from the current administration. Rosie O’Donnell recently revealed that she moved to Ireland just before Donald Trump’s inauguration. The comedian spoke about the “warm” life in Ireland, describing the people as “so loving and so kind.

O’Donnell explained that she is working towards obtaining Irish citizenship due to her grandparents’ birth in Ireland.

Although she had never envisioned moving to another country, she believed it was the right choice for her and her 12-year-old child, Dakota, who identifies as non-binary. Since Donald Trump’s reelection, a trend of American celebrities relocating to the UK has emerged. Recent Home Office statistics reveal a significant increase in applications for UK citizenship, up 40 percent from the previous year, with over 6,100 American citizens applying.

This represents a massive increase from what the country has seen in two decades. Among those moving to the UK are DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, who put their California mansion up for sale to embrace a ‘retirement’ in the UK. Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling, who were already residing in the UK, have decided to remain there, a choice also shared by British-American actress Minnie Driver, who returned to London after nearly thirty years in Los Angeles.

Courtney Love’s decision comes amidst a wave of celebrities departing the U.S. in response to the current political climate, hoping for a more welcoming environment elsewhere.
