Dave Chappelle recalls emotional SNL writers post-Trump win

Dave Chappelle shared a poignant story about the emotional atmosphere at “Saturday Night Live” after Donald Trump’s 2016 election victory. In a recent episode of Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series, Chappelle spoke with fellow comedian Mo Amer about hosting SNL the week following Trump’s win. Chappelle described the scene in the writers’ room as deeply emotional.

Man, when they called Donald Trump the winner, that s— shut the writers’ room down,” he said. “You should have seen them in there. Boy, they was crying… They couldn’t believe that this was happening.”

The raw feelings reflected the shock and disbelief that many Americans experienced following the election results.

Chappelle’s account offered a rare glimpse into the personal side of producing a weekly live comedy show in the face of significant political events. Reflecting on his monologue from that night, Chappelle noted the perspective he had at the time.

Post-election writers’ room emotions

“I look at it like a photograph. That’s what it felt like in that moment,” he said. “Now, if it ages well or not, I don’t get mad if I look at a picture because it’s not today.

That’s what it was at that time.”

Chappelle’s post-election SNL appearances have become somewhat of a tradition. He also hosted the show shortly after the presidential race was called for President Joe Biden and again in January 2025, prior to Trump’s second inauguration. His raw and insightful takes on major political events have often provided a comforting yet challenging perspective for many.

Chappelle’s ability to capture the sentiment of the moment makes his SNL appearances highly anticipated and impactful. The conversation between Chappelle and Amer shed light on the human emotions and reactions behind the scenes of a comedy institution like SNL during turbulent political times. It underscored the role that comedians and satirists play in processing and commenting on the state of the nation.
