Sean Bielat has worn many hats throughout his storied career. Early in his career, he followed in his family’s footsteps by joining the military, serving as an active duty Marine Corps officer. He then went on to work for companies such as McKinsey & Company and iRobot Corporation, as well as Endeavor Robotics, a company spun out of iRobot Corporation. He also became closely involved in politics, running for Congress twice.

Leading OMVP: A Fund Built for Allied Defense

Today, Bielat serves as a Managing Partner at OMVP, a venture capital fund focused on early-stage defense companies in Europe and allied nations. Key regions that the fund provides support to include the Baltic states, the Nordic countries, and countries such as Poland, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. OMVP’s investment strategy is largely influenced by Bielat’s belief that helping the United States’ allies abroad serves as a boost to America’s national security and inevitably helps serve America’s own interests in the long run. As Bielat once said in an interview, “For me, defense of Western democracy is a bedrock component of U.S. national security. Ensuring a strong and secure Europe is simultaneously a moral imperative and deeply intertwined with our own national interests.”

Education and Experience That Shaped His Vision

Bielat’s work with OMVP serves as a culmination of the knowledge, training, and experience he has gathered in his various professional and educational roles. In his post-graduate studies, he studied entrepreneurial management at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business and international security and political economy at the Harvard Kennedy School. In his career before OMVP, he worked with funds such as Arlington Capital Partners, which served as a private equity sponsor for Endeavor Robotics when he was growing the company, and Wincove Private Holdings.

OMVP’s Portfolio: Backing the Future of Battlefield Technology

Under Bielat, OMVP has backed defense industry startups in fields such as robotics, defense software, and tactical technology. The company’s portfolio includes companies developing products, services, and technologies such as ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance), swarm intelligence, battlefield communications, and battlefield software. It has backed companies such as Sentinel R&D, an advanced manufacturing company in the drone space, the robotic perimeter security startup Asylon, and the drone control technology company Pyrrhus Aeronautics.

An Operator-Led Team With a Shared Mission

Bielat serves on the fund’s executive team alongside Alex Lazama and Operating Partner Charles Dean, both of whom share Bielat’s military background. OMVP has emphasized its company culture as “operator-led capital for European defense.” The executive team’s extensive experience both in the military and in business has made them the ideal partners for pre-seed to series A companies looking for both capital and guidance as they seek to identify and fill needs in areas where there is clear military or government demand.

Lessons for Venture Capital Funds in Specialized Industries

Bielat’s leadership at OMVP offers some important lessons for venture capital funds seeking success by focusing on specific industries. First, an executive’s previous background is important to consider when looking for a specific niche to fill. Because of Sean Bielat’s experience as a Marine, he has developed an understanding of the technologies and services needed to be effective on the battlefield. In a similar manner, venture capital fund executives should turn all of their previous knowledge and expertise into an advantage when competing in their chosen industry.

Following Demand, Not Just Innovation

Second, venture capital funds would do well to follow demand, and not just innovation. Although Bielat’s OMVP invests heavily in new defense technologies, the fund has been clear and strategic about where and why it wants to invest. By seeing the demand for defense technologies in Europe and doing his part to contribute to national defense by investing abroad, Sean Bielat is showing other venture capital funds how they can approach international investments in a specific industry.
