Disney's 'Snow White' banned in Lebanon

Lebanon has banned Disney’s live-action remake of “Snow White” from playing in cinemas due to the inclusion of Israeli actress Gal Gadot. Gadot, who stars as the Evil Queen in the film, is on the country’s boycott list. Lebanon’s Interior Minister, Ahmad Hajjar, recommended the ban, according to local newspaper An-Nahar.

The actress, born in Israel, served in the Israel Defense Forces, which is mandatory for all Israeli citizens. Gadot has been a prominent supporter of Israel, particularly since October 7, following the country’s military campaign in Gaza. During a speech at the Anti-Defamation League’s summit in 2024, she expressed her dismay at global reactions to violence against Jews.

Lebanon’s film ban on Gal Gadot

Lebanon has previously banned other films featuring Gadot, such as “Wonder Woman,” due to her ties to Israel. A representative for Italia Films, a Middle Eastern company that distributes Disney films throughout the region, confirmed that no films Gadot has starred in have ever been released in Lebanon.

“Snow White,” which opened in U.S. cinemas on March 21, has received both critical and box office setbacks. The film follows a princess who is rescued by seven dwarf miners after being exiled into a dangerous forest by her wicked stepmother. This development adds to the ongoing tension in the region, reflecting broader political and cultural conflicts that impact the entertainment industry.

Lebanon has also blocked the release of another Disney film, “Captain America: Brave New World,” because of the Israeli nationality of its actress, Shira Haas. Gadot’s representatives have not immediately responded to requests for comment.
