July 1, 1979 — the first Sony Walkman goes on sale. It was the brainchild of Sony chairman, Masaru Ibuka.

Ibuka wanted to take his music with him as he traveled the world on business.

”Don’t you think a stereo cassette player that you can listen to while walking around is a good idea?” Ibuka told unconvinced execs.

Turns out, the visionary chairman was right.

The Walkman man would become a global phenomenon and forever change both the music industry and consumer habits in relation to technology.
