Half the fun of awards season is treating it like a hotly contested horse race. Who doesn’t crow when they win their office Oscar pool? 

So when the 2019 Oscar nominations were announced Tuesday morning by Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick) and Tracee Ellis Ross (Blackish), not even that delightful duo could mute the immediate groundswell of cheers and jeers.

This year’s list suggests that the Academy of Motion Pictures is unusually polarized. Historically comprised of mostly older voters, the group has recently expanded its ranks and the resulting nominations are a fascinatingly mixed bag, especially when viewed through the lens of a mature film fan.
