What do you buy the soccer fan who has everything? Well, a soccer club, obviously – but the good news is, you don’t have to. Because this particular soccer fan is rich enough to buy the club for himself. So that’s what he did.
You will know said-fan as Elton John – though he was born Reginald Dwight. Dwight legally changed his name in 1972 (bet you can’t guess the new middle name he went with*).
Elton was brought up on the outskirts of London, near enough Watford to become a dyed-in-the-wool and lifelong passionate supporter of Watford FC. When success came to Elton in the early 70s, he made it a personal – um – goal to become a director of the club.
By 1972 he had been appointed as Vice President of Watford FC, and it was during this period that he was photographed training with the players at the Club’s Vicarage Road ground – oh, plus his mate, singer Rod Stewart, also a big soccer-head.
The shots show Elton and Rod working up a sweat, and then getting rid of that sweat in the changing rooms with the other players.
Three years later, Elton occupied the position of not just Director, but indeed the Club’s Chairman. His reign, as it were, culminated with Watford’s position as runners-up in the 1983 FA Cup Final.
Elton remains a large shareholder, and on December 13, 2014, Watford reciprocated the support, opening the ‘Sir Elton John Stand. ‘One of the greatest days of my life’ said Elton
