You would be forgiven for not imagining that the young woman pictured below would come to personify a generation of women, hurtling across Manhattan in a pre-Uber cabs, sporting phenomenally expensive (but perfect) shoes. That’s right, this is a considerably younger and less-well-paid Carrie Bradshaw — aka Sarah Jessica Parker.
And at this point in her career, fabulous shoes were not part of the wardrobe remit. Sarah Jessica Parker was a mere 17 years old, but had landed the lead role of Patty Greene in the CBS sitcom Square Pegs.
The key word in Patty’s character description — and in fact the whole show — was awkward. Which these photos capture pretty accurately. Patty and her friend Lauren Hutchinson, played by Amy Linker, were a pair of teenagers, keen on and desperate to fit in with the high school cool kids.
Oh, and Square Pegs featured, in one of the most awkward events in TV and music history, a guest appearance by the seminal art-rock band Devo.
The show, however, only lasted just one season. Behind the scenes, there was an awkward problem.
As one Devo member recalled, more than 25 years later: “The girls were out of control. They might have been 15 or 16, but in their heads they were already 40.” Following the reports of excessive partying on the set and substance abuse in the presence of minors, Embassy television’s president axed the show.
None of which is to suggest Sarah Jessica Parker was involved in such proceedings, of course. Carrie Bradshaw? Well, that’s a different story.
