Perhaps famed satirist David Sedaris said it best.

You’ll recall Sedaris first leapt to literary fame with his Santaland Diaries , a chronicle of his time as a Macy’s Christmas elf named Crumpet.

“It doesn’t matter what religion you are,’’ he recently told The New York Times. “Everyone in America has to deal with Christmas.’’

Unless, of course, you leave town.

You can argue that December, not April,  is the cruelest month. Maybe you’re an empty nester and the kids aren’t coming home this year. Maybe there’s been a death in your family or your circle of friends, and you just don’t feel up to the usual festivities.

Or maybe you don’t celebrate Christmas anyway and you’d like a trip to escape the holly-jolly-ho-ho-ho forced down your throat.

So here are some of our favorite places to avoid the madness that is Christmas, Chanukah and Kwanzaa. Yes, they’re a bit on the pricey side. But almost all of them are in far away and remote locales and—good news!—there’s still availability. We checked.
