There’s one vacation category that’s keeping travel specialists busy these days: multi-generational travel, or grandparents traveling with kids and grandkids. Family travel represents about a third of all leisure trips, and agency network Virtuoso named it the top travel trend for 2019.

So you can bet that hotels and resorts are paying attention, creating new programs and remodeling properties in ways that keep extended families in mind. “Hotels are designing spaces that work for larger groups—three and four-bedrooms are ideal—and adding larger living areas where up to ten people can gather comfortably,” says Becky Stone, a principal with Denver-based OZ Architecture.

Public rooms that used to have a singular purpose—lobbies or ballrooms, for example—now aim to welcome every generation with amenities like pool tables, play zones, and wine and cheese bars, Stone adds.

With so many properties vying for your attention, it’s hard to sift through the options. With these six favorites for U.S. or overseas travel, you can be sure the whole family—from babies to baby boomers—will have a memorable time.
