Gunther defeats Jey Uso for WWE Championship

Jey Uso showed grace and humility after losing the WWE World Title to Gunther on Monday Night Raw. Uso addressed the crowd at Phoenix’s PHX Arena moments after the show ended. With his son Jace by his side, Uso apologized to the audience.

“I really wanna say I’m sorry to my son. I’m sorry to everybody here. I fought my ass off,” Uso said.

He also praised Gunther, who won his second World Title after a grueling 20-minute match. “Gunther is that dude,” Uso said. “One of the best athletes, one of the best pros I ever stepped foot in the ring with.

At the end of the night, I got hella respect for that man.”

The night took an unexpected turn for Uso, who had entered the ring with his son in a touching moment. But things changed when Gunther locked in a sleeper hold. Uso fought valiantly but eventually passed out.

The arena went quiet as Uso lay still and the referee called for the bell. Uso expressed gratitude for having his son with him on the road leading up to the match. “I’m so happy I brought him on the road with me this weekend,” Uso said.

“Even though I lost, I’m so glad he was here with me, traveling the road with me.”

Uso’s title reign lasted just 51 days.

Gunther wins WWE title in triumph

He had defeated Gunther for the championship at WrestleMania 41 and defended it three times.

In May, he lost by disqualification to Seth Rollins after interference marred the match. Uso then beat Logan Paul at Saturday Night’s Main Event, though that bout also had run-ins from John Cena and Cody Rhodes. On Monday, fans finally got a clean match, with Uso putting on his best performance as champion against Gunther.

Gunther had respect for Uso’s journey, even after losing the title to him at WrestleMania. “It was special to see Jey after that whole journey leading up to WrestleMania,” Gunther said. Uso’s title win was the high point of his 15 years in WWE.

He and his brother Jimmy ruled the tag team division for over a decade, winning ten titles and setting the record for longest tag title reign. In 2020, as Roman Reigns became Tribal Chief, Uso was Reigns’ first challenger. That kicked off a three-year story arc, with Uso serving as Reigns’ right-hand man until breaking free.

Uso beat Reigns decisively in a tag match at Money in the Bank 2023 that also featured Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa. Uso’s quest for independence and magnetic charisma made him one of WWE’s top stars, on par with Cody Rhodes. But his future as a main eventer is unclear, with Seth Rollins poised for a title run after winning Money in the Bank.

Uso vowed to fans that he would try to regain the title. “I’m gonna run it back,” he declared. “I’m gonna run it back.”
