Can a cookie satisfy your sweet tooth and calm your anxieties at the same time? Soon, the folks who brought you Oreos might achieve this feat.

As Mondelez CEO Dirk Van De Put told CNBC, the cookie giant hopes to introduce CBD into the family soon. “We’re getting ready, but we obviously want to stay within what is legal and play it the right way,” he assured.

While CBD (cannabidiol) is derived from the marijuana plant, it doesn’t make users high like THC.

Its calming and therapeutic components have become widely championed by influencers, celebrities, and wellness professionals.

Van Put told CNBC not to expect CBD versions of Oreos, and cast doubt on its future in Mondelez’s other “family brands.” (Mondelez family sweets include Chips Ahoy, Cadbury, Nilla Wafers, and Nutter Butter.)

However, the company is mulling whether to enhance other current brands or create new brands containing CBD.

An obvious concern is whether kids will be able to differentiate the enhanced snacks from regular cookies, and that’ll be something the company will have to address soon. Van De Put hinted that it might come with new branding and packaging, but he doesn’t see it as a risk to the company’s family-friendly labels.

Legally, it’s a bit tricky, because CBD isn’t legal in all food and beverage products yet. Van De Put is hoping the FDA will be clearer soon about where the product is allowed to be distributed.

If you poke around the internet long enough or pop into just about any boutique in places like Brooklyn, the CBD craze is certainly alive and well.

Chefs even named CBD-infused food as the top culinary trend of 2019. Mondelez might not be able to get us CBD cookies immediately, but lucky for them, it doesn’t look like the demand is fading anytime soon.
