Hemorrhoids can be an annoying and uncomfortable condition. We’ve all heard of Preparation H, but apparently there’s a new pain relief craze sweeping the internet. Some hemorrhoid sufferers have reportedly taken to inserting frozen potatoes into their anus for 30 seconds at a time.

Don’t do this.

The “home remedy” seems to have originated in Wales. According to Wales Online, true believers assert that potatoes have astringent properties and “help relieve the pain and itchy sensation which usually happens with this condition, while the ice cold potato constricts the blood vessels, reduces the swelling and relieves your pain instantly.”

Don’t do this.

A better plan

The medical community does not endorse this remedy. As Dr. Diana Gall told Wales Online, “There is no medical evidence that putting frozen potatoes inside the anus can help cure piles, so I would urge caution to anyone thinking of doing it.”

On what you should do instead? “Piles often go away on their own after a few days,” Dr. Gall added. “But there are some tried and trusted ways to keep them at bay. You should drink plenty of fluids, maintain a fiber-rich diet, and try having regular warm baths to ease itching and pain. If home treatments do not banish your piles, go to your doctor and explore alternative treatments.”

Save the french fries for dinner.
