When painting a home, choosing the right colors can have a significant impact on its sale price. Creating a blank canvas inside is often advised, so potential buyers can envision their furniture in the space. But did you know that painting your front door can add significant value to your property?

Zillow reviewed 135,000 photos from old houses across the country to see how paint colors impacted sales. They discovered that homes with charcoal gray, smoky black or rich jet black doors sold for $6,271 more than expected.

“For a seller, painting a front door is one the least expensive home prep projects, but also one that can have a powerful impact on a home’s sale price,” said Kerrie Kelly, Zillow home design expert.

Other tips

Zillow advised that homes with cool, neutral wall colors like blue bathrooms and light taupe living rooms also sold for more than expected. Light taupe, described as “a warm tan with pink or peach undertones, and darker peach to pink undertones on accent walls,” boosted sales by $2,793.

And of course some paint colors might actually deter buyers. “Homes with more style-specific colors like brick or raspberry red kitchens sell for $2,310 less than expected.” Homes with yellow exteriors sold for $3,408 less than other colors.

Keep in mind that painting the entire outside of your house can be an expensive job, ranging from $1,000 to several times that amount, depending on the size of the home.

It’s best to speak to a local real estate agent before taking on any large home improvement projects exclusively meant to boost your home’s value. Tastes can vary depending on the area of the country and the local housing market.
