Pro wrestling icon Hulk Hogan and former WCW executive Eric Bischoff have joined forces to launch a new freestyle wrestling league called Real American Freestyle. The league aims to provide a platform for amateur-style wrestling with significant prize money on the line. Bischoff emphasized that the league will focus on creating a legitimate sports competition while maintaining the sport’s integrity.
Hogan added that Real American Freestyle will combine traditional athleticism with entertainment elements to engage viewers. The league is seeking a long-term media partner to help establish its brand beyond just a streaming service. Left Lane Capital and early-stage technology investor Cassius are the primary financiers, with Hogan’s Real American Beer serving as the title sponsor.
In partnership with USA Wrestling, NCAA, and NIL organizations, Real American Freestyle allows athletes to compete regardless of their NCAA status, providing them with a genuine career path in the sport. The league guarantees bonuses for wins and championship purses, in accordance with NCAA regulations. Real American Freestyle offers amateur wrestlers a lucrative opportunity, with potential earnings reaching seven figures.
The league currently has a roster of 40 athletes, including Olympians and World Champions like Ben Askren, Kennedy Blades, and Zahid Valencia.
New freestyle wrestling league launched
Renowned amateur-wrestling coach Israel “Izzy” Martinez has also joined the team, marking an exciting addition to the league.
Bischoff plans to elevate the sport’s presentation by incorporating high-quality production values and dramatic storytelling to showcase the athletes’ sacrifices and discipline. The first event is scheduled for this summer in Cleveland, Ohio; the exact venue has yet to be disclosed. Real American Freestyle events will feature eight weight classes and nine-minute matches for both men and women.
The presentation will borrow elements from professional wrestling, including raised stages, themed entrances, and personalized video bios. Bischoff draws inspiration from shows like ‘The Voice,’ aiming to build a connection with the audience through well-produced athlete profiles. These stories are expected to enhance viewer engagement and attract sponsors.
The venture presents a lucrative business opportunity, with the potential for a future sale to TKO, a publicly traded company. Hogan noted that the goal is to turn the league into a “monster” first. Real American Freestyle promises to revolutionize amateur wrestling and offer athletes a new platform to achieve greatness and financial success.
