Tom Cruise’s latest film, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” has achieved a remarkable feat at the global box office. Despite facing significant competition and market challenges, the movie has secured the highest worldwide debut in the franchise’s history. This success comes on the heels of the previous installment, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning,” which underperformed compared to expectations.

“Dead Reckoning” ended its run with $570 million globally, falling short of its $300 million budget and the high standards set by its predecessor, “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.”

Paramount adapted its marketing approach for “The Final Reckoning,” positioning it as the concluding chapter in the long-running action series. The film opened strongly, earning a projected $77 million domestically over the extended Memorial Day holiday weekend. Internationally, it has garnered around $127 million, bringing its total global haul to $190 million, with projections to exceed $200 million soon.

However, the path to profitability for “The Final Reckoning” is challenging due to its reported $400 million budget, making it one of the most expensive films ever made.

Box office milestone for Cruise’s finale

To break even, the movie needs to generate over $800 million worldwide, which would make it the highest-grossing entry in the series.

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film encountered various production hurdles, including pandemic-related delays and industry strikes. Despite these challenges, the star-studded cast, led by Tom Cruise, continued to attract audiences. Cruise, who has been the face of the franchise since the mid-1990s, undertook a high-profile global press tour before the release, and the film had a glamorous premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

Critics have given the film a solid 80% rating, although slightly lower than its recent predecessors. Audiences have responded positively, with a 90% audience score on aggregator websites and an A CinemaScore from opening day viewers. “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” boasts an ensemble cast that includes Ving Rhames, Pom Klementieff, Hayley Atwell, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Angela Bassett, Henry Czerny, and Esai Morales.

The film is currently playing in theaters, and further updates on its performance are anticipated.
