Florida isn’t the top retirement destination anymore. According to recent research by RENTCafé, boomers’ favorite retirement destinations are states in the Southwest.

The apartment search site analyzed census data from the 250 largest U.S. cities and took note of the rising population of boomers in each ZIP code.

At the west side of Las Vegas, ZIP code 89138 took first place, with a 79% increase in boomer residents in the past five years.

It makes sense: Along with Vegas’s warm, sunny climes and entertainment attractions, Nevada boasts no income or inheritance tax. Austin, Texas, ZIP code 78754 came in second place, with 74% more boomer residents in the past half-decade.

Other desert cities like Mesa, Arizona (85212), and Amarillo, Texas (79119) came next, with boomer population boosts of 66% and 61%, respectively. The report found that boomers are also migrating to Oregon, Idaho, and Washington state.

Temperate Florida, known for its former retirement destination appeal, squeaked in as No. 19 of 20 as the city of Lakeland (33815) saw a 33% increase in boomer residents.

But if you’re looking for a change of scenery and some dry heat for your next big move, you’re certainly not alone.

Just remember to hydrate and wear sunscreen … And if Sin City ends up being your new home, be mindful not to spend all of your retirement savings at the slots.

Top 20 ZIP codes for boomer migration

But note that these retirement destinations are not the national leaders for boomer density. That honor goes to New York’s Brooklyn and Manhattan boroughs, followed by San Francisco; Queens, New York; and El Paso and Houston in Texas. All told, the New York City metro area had 14 of the top 20 ZIP codes for boomer populations.
