New How to Train Your Dragon opens to positive reviews

The highly anticipated live-action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon” is set to soar into theaters this weekend. Directed by Dean DeBlois, who helmed the original animated trilogy, the film is projected to earn between $70 million and $80 million domestically in its opening weekend. Internationally, it aims to collect another $110 million as it debuts in nearly every major territory.

Set in the mythical Viking village of Berk, the story follows Hiccup, a scrawny misfit teen who befriends an injured dragon he names Toothless. Their bond defies centuries of tradition where Vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies. Reviews are largely positive, with critics praising the film’s faithfulness to the beloved animated original.

Mason Thames delivers a standout performance as Hiccup, effectively conveying the character’s emotional journey. Nico Parker also gives a notable performance, with the two leads showcasing excellent on-screen chemistry. The action sequences, especially the climactic battle against the Red Death, are described as thrilling and visually spectacular.

However, some critics note that the transformation from animation to live-action has its pitfalls.

Positive reviews for live-action Dragon

Despite technological advancements, Toothless’ velocity is less convincing, and the film suffers from an overbearing realism.

Nighttime and interior shots are so dark that it becomes difficult to engage with the visual spectacle. Geared toward both new and returning fans, the film is expected to welcome a new generation to the “How to Train Your Dragon” series while providing a nostalgic trip for long-time fans. The live-action elements, combined with the faithful narrative, aim to create an engaging cinematic experience for all ages.

“How to Train Your Dragon” offers an astonishing, heartfelt, and epic cinematic journey. With DeBlois steering the ship, the film not only honors its predecessor but also sets the stage for subsequent sequels, promising a thrilling continuation of this beloved saga. The film is expected to top the three-weekend reign of “Lilo & Stitch,” which has become a huge box office hit.

Disney’s live-action remake will compete with “Dragon” for family audiences, but “Lilo & Stitch” has already amassed an impressive $339 million domestically and $775 million globally since the Memorial Day holiday frame. Also new to theaters this weekend, A24’s romantic drama “Materialists” is targeting $8 million to $9 million from 2,800 venues in its first weekend. Directed by Celine Song in her follow-up to the Oscar-nominated “Past Lives,” the film stars Dakota Johnson as a New York City matchmaker torn between the perfect match (Pedro Pascal) and her imperfect ex (Chris Evans).

“How to Train Your Dragon” is set to hit theaters on June 13, 2025, promising to be a thrilling and emotional ride for audiences of all ages.
