New trailer for Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later unveiled at CinemaCon

Danny Boyle took the stage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas to debut the latest trailer for “28 Years Later,” the next installment in his acclaimed horror series. The director reflected on his enduring love for the genre, remarking, “I still love an apocalypse, British-style. I still love the infected. And I still love blowing things up.”

Boyle hinted that fans would have to wait for the reappearance of the original “28 Days Later” star, Cillian Murphy, tantalizingly promising, “Like all good things in life, you may have to wait a little while for him to make his appearance.

Nia DaCosta, the director of the second film in the planned trilogy, “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” joined Boyle onstage. She shared, “While it’s very much informed by ’28 Days Later,’ the script for ‘The Bone Temple’ is very different. I was able to let my freak flag fly.”

Boyle candidly discussed the ongoing challenge of securing financing for the trilogy’s completion.

He encouraged fans to support the first two movies to show demand for the final installment. “28 Years Later” is based on a script by Alex Garland, who also penned the original 2002 film.

Garland remains integral to the franchise, having written the scripts for all upcoming movies. In addition to his role as director, Boyle will produce the new film alongside Garland, Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, and Bernie Bellew. Murphy, who starred in the original “28 Days Later” and recently won an Oscar for his performance in “Oppenheimer,” will serve as an executive producer.

The original “28 Days Later” followed Murphy’s character, a coma patient awakening in a world ravaged by the undead. The film grossed over $80 million globally and was followed by the 2007 sequel “28 Weeks Later,” where Boyle and Garland were involved as executive producers. “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” is slated for release on January 16, 2026.

Should the trilogy’s third film get the green light, Boyle has committed to directing it. CinemaCon, formerly presented by the National Association of Theater Owners and now by Cinema United, remains a key event for revealing upcoming cinematic projects and fostering industry connections.
