It opened at the top of the box office last weekend, making $48 million in the U.S. and $63.5 million worldwide. “Sinners” beat out the video game movie “Minecraft” for the number one spot. This was a surprise to many people in the movie industry.
They thought “Minecraft” would be the top movie for the third weekend in a row. In “Sinners,” Smoke and Stack open a juke joint in Mississippi. On opening night, three vampires show up and cause problems.

Some people on social media said the movie’s opening weekend numbers were not that impressive because of how much it cost. But Warner Bros., the studio behind the movie, worked hard to make “Sinners” a big event.
They had Coogler shoot the movie with IMAX cameras. This meant that 45% of the movie’s opening weekend money in the U.S. came from special large-format screens like IMAX.
Sinners opens strong at box office
Jordan said it was a challenge to play twins in the movie. He had to show the small differences in their personalities. “Smoke hides his pain; he holds his trauma.
Stack, on the other hand, smiles through his pain, making jokes to get through it,” Jordan said. “Sinners” shows that people still want to see new, original movies in theaters. A movie that is not a sequel or based on something else making more than $60 million in its first weekend is a big success, especially after the pandemic.
Warner Bros. has one more weekend to keep the momentum going for “Sinners.” It is likely that the movie will make back its $90 million budget and more. If the studio decides to keep the movie in theaters into the summer, it could do even better.
Some people online have questioned why “Sinners” is facing questions about how much money it will make. They point out that other original movies, like Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” were praised even though they opened to similar numbers. But “Sinners” is getting great reviews from audiences and critics.
It has a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” grade from viewers. Experts think strong word of mouth could help the movie make even more money in the coming weeks.
