The Season 2 finale of “The Last of Us” drew 3.7 million cross-platform viewers in the U.S. on Sunday night. This is a significant drop from the 8.2 million viewers who tuned in for the Season 1 finale. However, HBO expects the viewership numbers to grow after the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Season 2 has been averaging nearly 37 million global viewers per episode and continues to increase. In comparison, the Season 1 premiere eventually reached nearly 32 million viewers within 90 days post-premiere. This marked the largest audience for an HBO and Max debut season ever.

Since the end of Season 1, the series has surpassed 90 million total viewers. The lower finale viewership aligns with the reception of “The Last of Us Part II” video game. The game was more controversial than its predecessor due to bold narrative choices that sparked debate and strong opinions.

Season 2 finale viewership drops

“The Last of Us” takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. The story follows Joel, a hardened survivor, who is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone.

Their journey becomes a brutal and heartbreaking trek across the U.S. as they rely on each other for survival. Season 2 is set five years after the events of the first season. Joel and Ellie encounter new conflicts with each other and face a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than before.

The returning cast includes Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, and Rutina Wesley. New cast members for Season 2 are Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Young Mazino, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, Spencer Lord, Danny Ramirez, and Jeffrey Wright. Catherine O’Hara also guest stars this season.

“The Last of Us” remains an important series for HBO, with a strong and growing viewership worldwide.
