Tony Hawk reminisces about Kurt Cobain

Tony Hawk recently shared a touching memory on Instagram about attending a Nirvana concert in 1991. He posted a photo of the ticket stub from the show at The Vatican in Houston, Texas. Hawk said he went straight from a skateboarding event to the concert.

“It was as transformative as live music can possibly be,” Hawk wrote. “We all experienced something rare and powerful that night. The world would never be the same.”

Hawk has a special connection to Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, who died in 1994.

Hawk’s son Riley is married to Cobain’s daughter, Frances Bean Cobain. The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk, in September 2024. In his Instagram post, Hawk expressed his wish that Cobain could have lived to see his daughter as an adult.

“I wish Kurt were here so he could see the incredible woman his daughter has become, meet her devoted, caring husband, and hold our wondrous grandchild,” Hawk wrote.

Frances Bean Cobain was just a toddler when her famous father died at age 27.

Last year, on the 30th anniversary of Cobain’s death, she shared her own reflections. “I wish I could’ve known my Dad,” she wrote. “I wish I knew the cadence of his voice, how he liked his coffee, or how it felt to be tucked in after a bedtime story. I wondered if he would’ve caught tadpoles with me during the muggy Washington summers.”

Hawk has been enjoying his role as a grandfather. He recently posted a photo of himself sitting on a skateboard while holding baby Ronin. “What happens when all your kids can skate independently and no longer rely on you to give them rides? You wait until they have their own kids,” he joked. Circles (wheels?) of life.”

The shared history between the Hawk and Cobain families extends beyond their grandchildren to the influential music and skateboarding scenes of the 1990s. Stories like these resonate with fans, highlighting the enduring legacies of those who left an indelible mark.
