As founder of the publicly-traded data and information company InfoGroup (now known as Data Axle), Vinod Gupta knows what it’s like to start from humble beginnings before achieving international success. A native of the village of Rampur Maniharan in the region of Uttar Pradesh in India, he grew up struggling to make ends meet, often experiencing days with no running water or electricity. Out of a desire to give himself and his family a better life, he put all of his energy into his studies.
From Humble Beginnings to Global Success
After completing his secondary education at Digambar Jain College in 1962, he enrolled in the Indian Institute of Technology at Kharagpur, where he eventually graduated with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering in 1967. He went on to continue his studies in agricultural engineering abroad, at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. After developing an interest in business, he also earned a degree in marketing from Oxford University.
It was Gupta’s interest and training in business and marketing that eventually paid dividends, as he went on to work as a marketing manager at Commodore Corporation, where he found opportunities to build an information base for clients looking for mobile home dealers. He took the lessons, resources, and infrastructure from this endeavor and used them to found his own company, American Business Information, which eventually became known as infoGroup.
A Commitment to Education in India
Although Gupta’s success in business was not in the field he had originally chosen to study, agricultural engineering, he was able to find many opportunities as a result of his commitment to getting a good education. For this reason, Gupta has made it his mission to help other individuals searching for a better life in his native country of India by providing new opportunities for education and vocational training.
Inspired by his mentor, Warren Buffett, Gupta donated over $40 million to his alma mater, IIT Kharagpur, where he set up the first business school and law school. The business school that bears his name, the Vinod Gupta School of Management, was the first business school in the IIT system at the time of its inauguration by India’s President Shankar Dayal Sharma in 1993. He also financed the founding of the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law at IIT, which was established to meet the demand for intellectual property lawyers well-versed in technology patents and copyrights.
University of Lucknow and Public Health
Because Gupta’s father, a former doctor, was a graduate of the University of Lucknow, he also made charitable contributions to the university to establish the Giri Lal Gupta Institute of Public Health, a center for community health education and intervention. He also helped establish the Shanker Dayal Sharma Institute for Democracy, which teaches courses on democracy and governance and conducts parliamentary and judicial training programs.
Global Contributions to Education
Other higher education institutions that Gupta has contributed to include George Washington University, where he contributed $2 million to establish the Ben Gupta Endowed Fund for International Legal Education. He also donated $2 million to Phillips Exeter Academy to establish the Ben Gupta Scholarship Fund at that institution. For Gupta, his commitment to supporting education worldwide is not just a way of building up the next generation, but also a way to keep his father’s memory alive.
Building a Legacy Through Shared Opportunity
From Rampur Maniharan to global boardrooms, Vinod Gupta has never lost sight of where he began. By investing in education, especially for underserved communities and women, he continues to turn personal success into shared opportunity, ensuring that future generations have the tools, access, and hope to build better lives for themselves and their communities.
