The season three finale of Showtime’s hit series “Yellowjackets” brought the story full circle. It revealed the identity of the infamous “Pit Girl” and set the stage for an intense fourth season. In a shocking twist, Mari, played by Alexa Barajas, was revealed as the girl who met a gruesome end in the wilderness.
The mystery began in the pilot episode, where a flash-forward showed a girl in a white dress running through the snow before being impaled and eaten by her friends. Barajas shared that she had a hunch it would be her character, but it wasn’t confirmed until a phone call with the showrunners before filming season three. “When I watched the pilot, I had a suspicion that it was going to be me,” Barajas explained.
“Just the way she looked and the dynamics at play, it felt like a setup.”
The finale saw Mari participate in a brutal hunt that led to her death and subsequent cannibalism by her teammates. This scene was filmed frame-for-frame to match the original pilot’s flash-forward, juxtaposing the adult survivors’ memories with the brutal reality of their actions.
Mari’s shocking identity revealed
Reflecting on her time as Mari, Barajas said, “It’s nice that we got to know her a bit better, making losing her that much more impactful. I loved her zingers; she had this hard shell but was put in vulnerable positions this season.”
In the present timeline, Misty, played by Christina Ricci, uncovers that Shauna’s daughter Callie, portrayed by Sarah Desjardins, accidentally killed Lottie out of fear. This revelation leads Jeff and Callie to take off, leaving Shauna to face an existential crisis.
Co-creator Ashley Lyle noted that this raises questions about Callie’s character and her relationship with her mother. “I think that’s what Callie will be asking herself moving forward—who am I, what kind of person am I?”
As for Shauna, Lyle explained her breakdown as shedding her identity as a good mother and wife, realizing that this isn’t who she truly is. “Both grief and a liberating is letting go.”
The episode ended with a stunning cliffhanger, as Natalie, played by Sophie Thatcher, activated a broken satellite phone and made contact with the outside world.
“Please help us! Send help! We need some help! Can you hear me?!” Natalie shouts, and a male voice responds, “I can hear you.”
This final sequence provides an infusion of hope and possibility, setting the stage for what promises to be an intense and captivating fourth season. Fans are left eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the “Yellowjackets” saga.
